Protest Is Crucial

Subject: It's Time to Join the Resistance

Just wanted to thank you for your recent column encouraging people of all political stripes to air their grievances, with government and other institutions. I think this is crucial. It is also crucial for the system to be responsive. The Bush administration made it a point to ignore popular expressions of dissent, most notably regarding the Iraq invasion. My greatest concern is that some Americans will decide that society is so out of control, so unresponsive to their opinion, that they will resort to more and more desperate measures, with deadly results. This must be prevented - and your column I think is helpful in this regard. Keep up the good work! -- Skip M .

There are more people than you realize willing to engage in the long term process of fixing this mess. I am part of the state sovereignty movement which is clearly a first step.

I will tell you right now that I am not one for cynicism and pessimism, even there are tons of things about which to be cynical and pessimistic. Dunkirk was a perfectly reasonable time for England to have surrendered. Just consider the state of mind of the then American ambassador, Joe Kennedy. No one could have been more pessimistic about England's future than him.

If I were you, I would bring every last ounce of talent and energy given by God and throw myself at this. Fight or die. That's it. Being a keyboard warrior is not good enough.

On the matter of Obama's eligibility, I became convinced that the law profession is composed of truly spineless cowards. I could not find one single lawyer willing to tackle the issue. Just disgusting.

This whole rapture theory is false, and in the long run, it is causing the christian churches in America and across this whole earth to be apathetic, letting Christ's USURY enemies conquer for world domination. It is allowing the bankers to take control as we sit here this very moment. Last week you wrote in your column about religion. I have to say, in the beginning and end you sound like a completely reasonable person, but in the middle you veer way off. The two students described were, indeed, treated wrongly. Wade should have been allowed to do his report on Jesus and the other student to write in her journal about Jesus’s birthday because they both chose that themselves (as opposed to being assigned it). These are examples of discrimination, which is different from simply not favoring religion in schools.

However, in the middle of all this you just start spouting lies, which by the way were totally unnecessary to make your point. “An elite segment of society that views God as irrelevant has come to predominate”? Not at all true. Most people in this country are religious. Atheists are outnumbered by far, and there is a social stigma attached to atheism. Religion is still all over the place, though you’re writing as if it has been completely eradicated from the world outside of church. It’s still on the money, it’s still in the court house, politicians routinely call on God to bless everyone at the end of their speeches, etc. And there is absolutely nothing stopping a student from praying in school.

You say, “Most Americans have now come to accept the assumption that religious faith has no real bearing on civic responsibility or morality.” That statement is just the farthest thing from the truth. That atheists are immoral (and can’t possibly be moral) is one of the most common accusations hurled at us by religious people. If what you said were true, politicians wouldn’t go out of their way to show us how they are “good church-going people.” I’m sure you know an atheist would have no chance at being elected president because the majority of Americans still associate religious belief with morality. It would be great if what you said were true. If Americans generally recognized morality can be completely separate from religion, they might be more tolerant and less prejudiced against people who are not of their religion.

Finally, your word choice in this section is especially offensive. You say “elitists,” with their “anti-religious campaign” are “hysterical.” This just sounds like anti-atheist propaganda, and it is such a shame you are doing that when what you say you want is an “America that stands for freedom and pluralism.” -- Liza H .

The Pentagon is training and arming the local police? Does that violate the Posse Comitatus Act?

The growing tendency of the police to adopt paramilitary tactics and procedures is alarming and so is the growth and--sad to say--growing acceptance by a benumbed public --of government surveillance. I agree we should try to spread the word and educate our friends and neighbors about what's going on. But that would be easier to do if you had a link with these articles that enables us to e-mail them to others.

Concerning the comments published in your feedback, Steve P. should worry a bit more about what is happening to our liberties and less about who is criticizing George W. Bush and why. Bush was against big government? You mean it was small government that was opening citizens's mail listening in on phone calls, and the other things Mr. Whitehead described? But I guess for Steve anything Bush did was all right because he had "the best interest of the citizen at heart." Steve's comments bring to mind the final word on Winston Smith in 1984: "He loved Big Brother."--Jack K.

Meritless Argument

No law prevented the newspaper from running its cartoon. It was offensive to some of us who have the same right to protest as the paper has to publish. To define the protest as "political correctness" is meritless and a weak effort to support the conservative agenda. If the paper chose to apologize, so be it. But to blame the protestors as vehicles that restrict the freedom of expression is misleading and false. -- Pamela K .

What's The Beef With 'W'?

I respect John Whitehead very much and have never missed any of his commentaries or at least the video ones. I wonder though if he doesn't have a particular beef with former President George W. Bush, as in this commentary, and as in others, he seems to make it a point to poke a punch at George Bush. For example blaming George Bush for laying the groundwork for Marshall law being a possibility, when in fact Marshall law has been an option for many preceding Presidents. I know that George Bush was not the perfect President, but I believe that he had the interest of the American citizen at heart. He was opposed to abortion, opposed to big government, wanted folks to earn their keep not rely on welfare as the answer to everything, was very supportive of our soldiers, seemed to be a man of Christian morals and values. What is president obama in comparison to that? He is intentionally out to undo our country in every sector that he can, both politically and morally. He has no respect for human life and caters to the needs or rather wants of those who do not want to work, to the so called gay rights people, and to illegal aliens... Consider me a very concerned American citizen that doesn't just sit still. I do write my Congress people and Senators and also encourage others to do the same. My late father was a constitutional attorney and having read your article I can only say you disgrace that honorable title. The free speech rights granted in the constitution protect expression from governemt interference and only government interference censorship. It does not protect us from the rage of our fellow citizens, from boycott, from name calling, from all manner of non-violent non-governmental sanction. and no it does not protect us, as you mendaciously contend, against the outpourings of "mob mentality," unless that mentality is specifically instrumentalized through government institutions. You see all such popular strictures are themselves specimens of the free exercise of speech which you rather fatuously claim to be defending. The free speech article in the Bill of Rights does not even protect us against violent threat and action for things we might have said. That is the function of assault and battery laws. By wrapping your rather pedestrian critique of political correctness in the mantle of free speech rights you have hopelessly muddled the meaning of the constitution and confused, perhaps deliberately, your less informed compatriots as to the real purview of that document. As a strictly political screed, your column has some merit; as an invocation of legal rights and principles, it is nothing short of disgraceful.--Joseph V.

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

This amendment simply states that we in this country will have no law establishing a state run religion or preventing the free exercise of religion. To restrict any speech about God or religion because someone doesn't want to hear it, is interfering with that freedom. Basically these restrictions are laws that the constitution states will not be made!! When will our lawmakers and judges get off their high horse and stop this nonsense.

Without the freedoms God intended for us to have, we are certainly heading for the biggest failure in this country's existence. So, let's get back to looking to the truths and morals set forth by God and get us back on the right track again. --Lon M.

Playing to Win, Not to Lose!

As long as we Christians fight from a "defensive" position, we will continue to lose ground. We cannot move forward if we are playing to "not lose", we must be constantly playing to win. It's a completely different mindset and focus, and I am sure when you 've gone into the courtroom, it was with a mindset to come out victorious.

It's the same thing we must do in order to advance and protect our liberties together. Lawsuit after lawsuit must be filed against public persons who continully violate their oaths of office by promoting "policy" and writing laws that are an affront to religious liberty., and also and attack our enemies on every front, every day, every chance we get, to disrupt their rhythm. Organized protests against broadcasters and advertisers who promote the homosexual lifestyle, including public schools, would be just a start, It has been suggested that we use Saul Alinsky's marxist tactics against our enemies, since those are the methods used against us.

And here's the BIG ONE.... You must lead the way in how to defund the public school systems of citizens tax dollars. Us citizens have NO SAY in what the public schools do with the funding, often wasted, that we are forced to pay via property taxes, etc. The administrators, often LIBERAL with an agenda, ignore the public and do whatever they want. PTA's have become extinct. The schools must be assailed continually and an atmosphere and attitude of "privatization" created by removing government paid bureaucrats and replacing them with "elected" persons from the general public. Replacing professional, elitist bureaucrats with parents, etc, and businesspeople who would work for half the pay (it's ridiculous what these people make! especially here in las vegas, nevada) and would be answerable to the public, being mostly the parents of thekids. Either that or vouchers paid to private schools with local (not federal) public money.

It would also be good to promote and proclaim the concept of a Citizens Audit Authority, that would have Constitutional authority to review, audit, AND PROSECUTE pubic officials that 1) violate their oaths of office 2) legislate unlawfully with unconstitutional laws 3) demonstrate fiscal recklessness 4) violate the law, etc. THIS WOULD TAKE YEARS TO PLACE, but it would work if the idea was promoted vigorously enough to the public at large. Making politicians accountable and responsible, what a concept! It would also necessary to make them non-exempt from the laws they pass upon everyone else. They should be the first to be an example of, or made an example of. Perhaps even forcing them to pay, out of their own pocket, for any fiscal recklessness.

You must also constantly remind everyone that the Bill of Rights or the Constitution make no provision to ban "offensive" speech. All speech is protected, first and foremost, religious speech. There also is no language that the government is prohibited from "endorsing" a religion, good grief our history is replete with endoresements, beginning with George Washingtons's Thanksgiving Proclamation, or even the Mayflower compact. I realize that you are fully aware of all of this, ;but it must be done in an offense position, advance not retreat, offense not defend. Play to win, not to lose. No apologies, please!!!!

I am not one to contact anyone in the news on any issue, but this case struck a cord with me that I simply could not wrap my brain around. I find it amazing that the law says, that a person of authority from the schools cannot promote or seem to promote a religious belief. Yet, the school boards have no problem forcing the students today to love Obama, and if one is a supporter of a Conservative, than that student is ridiculed and even graded down for it. Even in college, if a student is Conservative and not Liberal, they run the risk of having their grades ruined and labeled a problem student.

Now, you might be surprised to know my background. I am from Baltimore, MD. I am Jewish. And I am 55. And when I went to school, we had prayers in the morning and we had Christmas plays for the holidays. I loved the plays. The music was great, many songs written by Irving Berlin. When it came to the part, that said, Christ, my Lord, I didn't say it. I didn't make a deal of it. Nobody cared that I didn't say it. So what's the big deal? When it came to prayers in the morning, I said my prayer to myself when they said their prayer, and that was fine. Now, if I had been forced or coerced into saying something, that would have been different, but that was never the case. And if I didn't believe in a higher being than I would have just said a prayer to myself, to be a better person. You can always look to your own inner spirit to do better.

It's a good thing my kids aren't in grade school anymore, because this Obamamannia is making me sick. And I would be up in arms about my kids having to "love him or else!"
