An Exercise in Free Speech: Randall Terry, Leader of Obama Abortion Protest at Notre Dame University, to Speak in Charlottesville on June 3

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.--The Rutherford Institute will launch its 2009 Summer Speaker Series on Wednesday, June 3, at 10 am, with a lively exercise in free speech by anti-abortion activist Randall Terry entitled, "Obama, Abortion and the Notre Dame Protests." British attorney John Beckett will speak at 1:00 pm on "Are Hate Crimes a Good Idea?"

Randall Terry, who recently organized and led protests against President Barack Obama at Notre Dame University, will speak about his unorthodox methods of raising awareness about abortion in America. The founder of Operation Rescue, which carries out anti-abortion protests at abortion clinics, Terry has been arrested more than 40 times. His most recent arrest came as a result of his protest of President Obama's commencement visit at Notre Dame University.

The Rutherford Institute is pleased to welcome a broad array of speakers to its 2009 Summer Speaker Series. The Institute's Summer Speaker Series engages leaders from a cross-section of cultural, philosophical and legal backgrounds in stimulating discussions with law students, lawyers, civil liberties activists and community members. This year's lineup of speakers will address issues ranging from civil liberties post-9/11 and criminal justice reform to the dissolution of the print media, religious freedom in America, partisanship in Congress and what Americans can do to guard against attacks on the Constitution.

The Summer Speaker Series is open to the public. However, seating is LIMITED, so space must be reserved early by calling (434) 978-3888.

Among the speakers scheduled to appear this summer are: Bruce Fein, the former associate deputy attorney general under President Ronald Reagan, who will speak on "The Life and Death Struggle for Our Constitution"; Robert O'Neil, director of The Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression, who will speak on "Religious Freedom in Modern America"; and Nat Hentoff, a nationally syndicated columnist, on "Is This America? The Attack on the Constitution and What It Will Take to Repair It."
