John and Carol Whitehead of The Rutherford Institute Recognized for Innovative Approach to Defending Liberty

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.--John W. Whitehead, founder and president of The Rutherford Institute, and his wife Carol have been named the latest recipients of the Elijah Award in recognition of their "innovative approach to defending those liberties that are of such crucial importance to all alternative educators." Sponsored by the Quaqua Society, the Elijah Award recognizes those individuals who have made the greatest contributions to the home education community, including protecting parental rights and efforts to turn the hearts of parents to their children and the hearts of children to their parents. Married in 1967, John and Carol have five children.

According to the Quaqua Society, "John Whitehead was the first person to champion the civil-rights component of the 'modern' home-education movement. He was one of the first to understand that the cause of alternative education is based not only upon free-market principles and pedagogical innovation, but also upon a commitment to ensuring legal protection for the fundamental human liberties of all people. John Whitehead became the first modern 'briefcase warrior' for home education, litigating and writing to preserve parental liberty and home education. Many attorneys in other service organizations received their training from The Rutherford Institute. John's innovative legal and institutional paradigm, once the target of great skepticism, now serves as the model for numerous other legal organizations founded after 1982 (both inside and outside of the alternative-education movement)."

Carol Whitehead has dedicated herself to helping John pursue his vision of defending people who are persecuted or oppressed for their beliefs without charging them for such services, which was realized with the founding of The Rutherford Institute in 1982. In the last year alone, The Rutherford Institute handled over 10,000 requests for legal assistance. Many such requests were from home educators, parents confronting child protection agencies, minorities suffering religious persecution and victims of improper searches and seizures. The Institute maintains a national affiliate network of volunteer attorneys who receive training, legal research, case support and funding for court expenses. The Institute also maintains a media department to educate the public about their constitutional freedoms. John Whitehead has authored more than twenty books, including several groundbreaking works on parents' rights and home education, which were major factors in Quaqua's selection of the Whiteheads for the Elijah Award.

The Rutherford Institute is an international, nonprofit civil liberties organization committed to defending constitutional and human rights.
