TRI Attorneys Offer to Defend Del. School District Against ACLU Demand to Cease Opening School Board Meetings With Prayer
WILMINGTON, Del. -- Attorneys for The Rutherford Institute have offered to assist a Delaware school district in responding to the Wilmington, Del., chapter of the ACLU's recent demand that the district cease its practice of opening school board business meetings with a brief invocation."It's time to draw a line in the sand," said John W. Whitehead, president of The Rutherford Institute. "It is my hope that the Indian River School District will choose to set an example for its students and members of its community by standing up for its constitutional right to open its meetings by invoking divine guidance for its deliberations and decisions."
An official with the Indian River School District Board of Education contacted The Rutherford Institute after the Wilmington, Del., branch of the ACLU demanded that the school board stop opening their monthly business meetings with a prayer. A special school board meeting will be held on Aug. 23, 2004, at 7:00 p.m., at Sussex Middle School to decide the issue.
