'Faith in Action Study Bible' Features Essays from Christian Leaders, Including John W. Whitehead

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Zondervan, a leading Christian publishing company, has recently issued the Faith in Action Study Bible: Living God's Word in a Changing World. Answering the charge to "not merely listen to the word...do what it says" (James 1:22), this New International Version of the Bible, which was published in partnership with World Vision, aims to help readers deepen their "understanding of God's word and cultivate a thoughtful, genuinely Christian lifestyle in a world challenged by wars, conflict, greed, lust, injustice, poverty, and affluence." The Faith in Action Study Bible includes 150 articles and profiles from respected Christian authors who share practical advice, inspiring profiles, and classic writings to help readers live their faith every day, as well as glimpses of the lives of people around the world who've lived out a high-impact faith, as well as everyday recipients of Christian love in action.

"As the president of World Vision so aptly stated in the introduction to this Study Bible, never before has the need for Christians who put their faith into action been more acute," said John W. Whitehead, president and founder of The Rutherford Institute. "We see this every day at The Rutherford Institute, in the courage of those who choose to take a stand when their religious liberties are violated and in the selfless dedication of our volunteer attorneys, who sacrifice greatly to stand alongside us and wage these battles for faith and freedom."

The introduction to the Faith in Action Study Bible recounts the experience of a person who had once seen a Bible from which all of the passages that related to helping the poor, standing up for justice, and giving generously had been removed with a razor blade. The result was a book in tatters, barely held together, because so much had been slashed out. As the publishers explain, "That is because the faith described in the Bible is inseparable from the actions that flow naturally from it. The Christian faith is a faith of bold and revolutionary action. It was revolutionary in Jesus' time, and it is still revolutionary in ours." Among the many full-length articles and essays in the Faith in Action Study Bible are contributions from such contemporary writers and leaders as John W. Whitehead, president of The Rutherford Institute, Mother Teresa, C.S. Lewis, and Jimmy Carter. Whitehead's essay, "The Role of the Law in Helping the Poor and Oppressed," is featured within the book of Matthew. The Study Bible also features an innovative commentary system to help the reader carry the Bible's teachings into his everyday life. It also contains 12 maps, outlines and biblical timelines, modern day stories of faith heroes, and a graph section in color entitled "the World in the 20th Century." According to the publishers, a portion of the proceeds from the purchase of the Faith in Action Study Bible will be used to support World Vision's mission. World Vision is a Christian relief and development organization dedicated to helping children and their communities worldwide reach their full potential by tackling the cause of poverty.

The Rutherford Institute is an international, nonprofit civil liberties organization committed to defending constitutional and human rights.
