Texas School Buckles, Ends Student Tracking Project

A school district in San Antonio, Texas, is dropping a controversial student tracking program, officials announced Wednesday.

The "Student Locator Project" was supposed to increase attendance by tracking students' locations through a chip on their ID badges.

Some students who opposed it said it violated their civil liberties.

Andrea Hernandez, a sophomore at John Jay High School's Science and Engineering Academy, was expelled after objecting to the badges based on religious freedom and privacy concerns.

The Rutherford Institute attorneys filed suit against school officials on her behalf.

The district said it dropped the program because of the civil liberty lawsuit, low participation rates and negative publicity.

"This decision by Texas school officials to end the student locator program is proof that change is possible if Americans care enough to take a stand and make their discontent heard," Rutherford attorney John W. Whitehead said.
